Show notes – Episode 1
Who we are?
1. Today we have Jon and Andy, but on future webinars we are going to bring in some guests and people we work alongside here at GPS Training.
2. Jon, managing director Shepherds Walks Ltd who is the parent company of GPS training.
3. Andy, the reviewer, tech support and all round ‘geek’ (in a nice way) of GPS Training.
What is this podcast all about?
1. It will be a monthly affair and I suspect will evolve over time.
2. It will consist of reviews, training chat, top GPS and route planning tips, and we will answer any questions you have regarding outdoor GPS units.
3. It will all (hopefully) be delivered in casual, relaxed manner that will make for some easy listening.
4. It will be available on our web site and over time you will be able to download it from iTunes, Google, Soundcloud and other places you download your podcasts from.
5. Please do feedback after you have listened to any of our podcast as so we can grow over time to make it the ‘must listen’ podcast on the web.
Who are GPS Training?
Largest independent retailer of GPS units in UK, why is that and what makes us unique.
1. We don’t just sell a box with a GPS in, we teach you how to use it in with the price via webinars and online resource.
2. We use every day the GPS units we sell so we can offer impartial honest advice.
Largest GPS training provider in UK
1. We deliver nationwide courses, these are physical courses – South Downs, New Forrest, Cotswolds, Northamptonshire, Sherwood Forest, Lakes, Northumberland and Perth.
2. We deliver webinars, live seminars and of course we have the online resource, but more about that later
So, without further ado let’s get on with today’s webinar ……
In today’s webinar we are going to look and chat over the following –
1. Chat over and review of the new SatMap Active 20 – 2 months on
2. Garmin BaseCamp – what is it and how can Garmin users utilise it?
3. The best mid-range Garmin GPS device – units under £350.00
4. The big debate – can you plan routes on your GPS unit?
5. New course location – New Forest
6. Top tips – both Garmin and SatMap
7. And finally – what are we up to over the coming month
1. Chat over and review of the new SatMap Active 20 – 2 months on
Likes:
1. Large 3.5” Hi Res Tough Gorilla Glass Screen
2. High Res maps with very quick buffering when moving
3. Dual button and Touch great for winter using buttons but nice to have ability to touch screen for speed
4. Strong satellite lock now using Gallileo we have seen 1.5 metres
5. Large battery good life 5000mah
6. IP68 High Weather rating
7. Updates via wifi
Dislike:
1. As both a hike and a road cyclist would have like to have seen turn by turn routing for roads
2. Compass pointer not as good as Garmin directional arrow tend to just leave on map page
3. USB Cover bit stronger but you do get replacement
4. Weight 316g + positive large battery
2. Garmin BaseCamp
– Free route planning software for Garmin GPS users.
– In the past you needed to buy your maps twice, once for your GPS and then again for your computer (Memory Map, Anquet, Quo etc etc) but now you no longer need to as Garmin BaseCamp enables to view the Ordnance Survey maps on your GPS on your PC/ Mac.
– It enables you to do so many things for example –
• Plan routes. Tracks on your PC/ Mac – far easier than doing this on your unit.
• It enables you to manage the data (tracks etc) on your GPS.
• It is the software you use to download your 1:25k mapping when you use a Birdseye voucher.
• If you want to know more about and want to learn how to use Garmin BaseCamp we have webinars, hours of videos in the ‘online resource’ and also the second day of our Garmin GPS training weekend teaches you everything you need to know to utilise Garmin BaseCamp.
3. The best mid-range Garmin GPS device – units under £350.00
The contenders are –
• eTrex 30x (£220.00 with birdseye vouchers)
• eTrex Touch 25 and 35 (£320.00 and £350.00, bundled with full GB OS mapping)
• GPSMAP64s (£350.00, bundled with full GB OS mapping)
4. The big debate – can you plan routes on your GPS unit?
5. New course location – New Forest
• Ian, who delivers our South of England course has pioneered and will deliver our Garmin 2 day GPS course in this new location, the New Forest.
• We have had a great take up with the first course (14th and 15th October) with just 1 place left on it.
• We have already added another course for March (17th and 18th March)
• During Ian’s recce and research I know he has been taken back by both the facilities and the location, some great walking on the doorstep.
6. Top tips – both Garmin and SatMap
• Garmin top tip – Reverse Route weather conditions
• SatMap top tip – Lock Screen
7. And finally – what are we up to over the coming month

Excellent. Very clear presentation. Brilliant interaction between the 2 speakers, its as though you had done this many times before! Though I know its your first podcast.
Very practical as ever.
Great pod cast and very easy to understand as very little technical jargon used. Good to hear about the pros and cons of the latest units and the online resource is a great place to go to look at the points discussed in more detail.
Excellent podcast. Really appreciated the fact that it wasn’t too techical. Look forward to future podcasts
