Welcome to this month’s GPS Training podcast, it’s our 33rd episode.

  1. In this month’s we again have Ian and me Jon, both from GPS Training. How are you keeping Ian? Webinar last night – Jon
  2. With the Carona pandemic that is currently effecting the UK and the wider world, it may be a bit of a different podcast.
  3. During these difficult times we are planning to do a fortnightly podcast, hopefully it will help in some small way to help get everybody through these difficult times.

So, without further ado let’s get on with today’s podcast ……

So, in this month’s Podcast –

· We are going to have a quick update regarding the current Carona situation and how, rightly, it is effecting our training courses and what home learning options we have for you all

· After the great feedback we had after Paul Freeman we had on the 31st Podcast we again have him on this months podcast, this time paul comers with his mountain rescue hat on and he looks and discusses with us what to do is something goes wrong in the hills.

This interview was recorded pre Carona pandemic, so it is a really great interview that really does take us out of the current situation the country is in.

· We then have Ian’s FAQ’s, the frequently asked questions Ian has answered whilst supporting our customers or on some of the GPS Training courses he has been leading.

  1. To start this month’s Podcast, we are going to look at how the current Caronavirus Pandemic will effect you with our GPS training hat on

With the current pandemic hitting the country

Training

  1. Currently, we have postponed all our ‘physical’ GPS courses until the end of June 2020.

Many thanks for everybody in supporting us in this decision, everybody to date has been happy with this.

We are honoring those places for 25 months, so once everything has blown over we will be rescheduling and delivering courses.

If you do sign up for course for later in year you get free access to online resource from time you book so you can start your learning from today, we have notified everybody via email and once we hear back from you we are issuing you with your username and password for the online resource.

BUT a very big thank you, it is truly humbling.

  1. Webinars and masterclasses continuing as planned, we may add more dates, depending on demand.
  2. Online resource – our premier online training platform – It’s there and we keep adding to it.
  3. We are looking at some online 1:1 training for those of you in self isolation or just want to crack on.

We use online video conferencing all the time for business to business meetings, so please take this up and we can spend half an hour going through the varies options we have.

Both on GPS units or the route planning software

I am hoping these will be in place early next week and you will be able to book or transfer an existing booking one of these – watch this space

GPS Sales

GPS Sales – these have held up very well in the last few weeks, so a massive thank you to everyone, it is appreciated.

  1. We have worked hard this week and every GPS has now got product videos, showing you what’s inside the box, over 50 videos!
  2. Online consultation if you are thinking about buying/ changing your GPS – mentioned in today’s newsletter.

Please do book an appointment with us if you are wanting to buy a gps unit.

We use online video conferencing all the time for business to business meetings, so please take this up and we can spend half an hour going through the varies options we have.

As we are an online business, we are currently processing orders as normal – Next day delivery.

To keep up to date with any changes, please keep checking our Facebook page and why not – Sign up to our newsletter.

Please be aware we are running with a skeleton staff, many thanks for your support at this time, it is very much appreciated.

2. The next thing on this month’s Podcasts is a chat with Paul Freeman about what to do when something goes wrong in the hills

Hill safety for walkers – what to do if something goes wrong whilst you are in the hills

Winter and Summer – different kit, different preparation and kit?

Below are some tips looking at what to do, so you are prepared on the hill in winter.

Also, we will look at what to do if something goes wrong whilst you are in the hills and look at hill safety for walkers.

Emergency Kit

In your rucksack it is advised to have a dry bag with some emergency kit.

These should include a –

Whistle
Headtorch
spare AA batteries
hand warmers
spare laces
repair tape
spare hat & gloves
foil bag
and a warm emergency layer.

First Aid

Always carry a fully stocked first aid kit on the hill.

This should be full of items for larger problems but it can always be used so smaller issues. So rather than a bag full of small plasters, carry lots of bandages, absorbant pads, blister plasters, and large dressings as well as wipes and gloves.

Help – Phone signal or InReach

Getting help is generally the same in summer or winter, but the need for this to happen quicker is more important in the winter.

Mobile phones generally don’t like the cold, and having to use it is liaise with the Emergency services in the winter months could kill the battery very quickly. There is also the risk that there won’t be phone signal where you are.

For this reasons you need to consider carrying a small InReach Mini.

This is a two-way satellite communicator that allows me to send an SOS message in an emergency and has 100% global coverage. The monitoring centre will then get back to you with regular updates on the Emergency Services response, in the UK they will raise Mountain Rescue to aid your rescue. InReach Mini is less than 100g, waterproof, durable and will hold its charge for 1 year in your rucksack.

Essential walking kit when heading out for a walk

If you are heading out into the hills or even on a low-level walk what kit should you be taking with you, what essential kit when heading out for a walk? I know these days many people are wanting to walk light, but there are a number of essentials you should be taking with you.

If you think of anything that we have missed, please do let us know.

Clothing

– Breathable base layer
– Insulating mid-layer
– Walking trousers, not jeans
– Waterproof jacket
– Waterproof over-trousers
– Hats & gloves
– Sun hat
– Rucksack/daypack

Footwear

– Walking boots/shoes. Need to be comfortable and well-fitting
– Walking socks, these must be breathable – Mohair, Marino or other specialist socks

Rucksack essentials

– Fully charged mobile phone in a dry bag, something like an Aquapac
– Map & compass (even if you use GPS)
– Torch or head torch
– Bottled water
– Flask of hot drink
– High energy snacks
– Spare warm clothing
– Spare socks
– Survival bag (just in case)
– Emergency contact details
– First aid kit
– Suncream
– Sunglasses

Thanks, Paul, for joining me again on this month’s PodcastThe next thing on this months Podcast is Ian’s FAQ’s., the questions he has been asked whilst both delivering courses or in his support role which we offer at no extra cost to people who buy GPS units from GPS Training.

3. In this part of the Podcast we talk over some of his FAQ’s, the frequently asked questions he has been asked whilst supporting our customers and also on the courses he has led over the past month.

Yes you can.

  1. Log in to your Xpedition2 account on the iPad/tablet
  2. Active 20 set up – item 6 – WiFi settings (WiFi ‘On’ and Xpedition2 Connectivity> ‘Live Site’)
item 39 – Enter User name – in there, enter your Xpedition2 ‘User Name’ and ‘Password’

Fenix watch – My watch is paired to my smartphone via Garmin Connect but the weather doesn’t update itself

  1. I find with my Fenix 5Plus, although it seems to have improved over the last few months in being kept up to date, by opening up the Garmin Connect app it seems to update the watch if it shows that it needs to receive data
  2. has the watch disconnected itself from phone?

Don’t forget we have lots of tips and solutions to your questions in the GPS Training online resource – go to – gpstraining – click on – online resource – on the top menu bar – and then log in – select your unit and you will see the top tips for that unit down at the bottom of the menu of units.
